Amazing local ministry aiming to break cycles of generational trauma. Wow! Read more

Kim Zylstra, Director New Way Ministries – a transitional housing program for mothers with young children or those in crisis pregnancies – spoke at the Lynden Breakfast Kiwanis on July 2, 2025.

Operating from a 35,000-square-foot former rest home in Lynden, WA, the facility houses up to 25 families, with 18 sharing community kitchens and seven in studio apartments. Recently, the organization acquired the entire building which will add an indoor play area for children, addressing their trauma through play and mentorship. Kim highlighted the organization’s commitment to intentional care, community collaboration, and addressing challenges like mental health through potential grants for on-site counseling. The overarching mission is to provide Christ-inspired support, promoting lasting stability for families in need.

New Way Ministries focuses on long-term support, allowing residents to stay for two to four years to foster healing and stability through a three-phase program. Phase one emphasizes rest, trauma recovery, and skill-building, with no work or school for the first six months. Phase two introduces part-time work or education and continuing life-skills classes. Phase three offers studio apartments for those needing extended support, with rent partially saved for future independence. The program includes case management, childcare, and Bible studies, aiming to break cycles of generational trauma.

Asked about where the residents come from, Kim said they receive residents from local counties but also further south and east Washington and a few out of state.

Of note, New Way MInistries is located in the same campus as Project Hope, which serves around 700 community members weekly, distributing 30,000–40,000 pounds of food monthly and providing emergency aid like utility vouchers and bus passes. Both New Way Ministries and Project Hope operate under the umbrella of Christian Hope Association.

Lynden Breakfast Kiwanis enthusiastically financially supports New Way Ministries.
